What to do in Cape Town in May
Winter is fast approaching the Mother City but that does not
mean that Cape Town will go into hibernation. On the contrary, Cape Town is the
city that never sleeps. The final days of Autumn have lots in store for those
visiting Cape Town. Take a peek at our top event recommendations for the month
of May and let us know what your favourite things to do are during the colder
months in Cape Town.
· The Road
to Mecca Show. The Fugard Theatre is currently home to Athol Fugard’s “The
Road to Mecca” show which will run until 19th May. This captivating
production set in the Karoo tells the story of one woman’s longing for freedom
from her conservative and highly religious community during the Apartheid time
period in South Africa in the 1970’s. The production runs from Tuesday to
Friday at 8pm, and on Saturdays at 4pm and 8pm and has received great feedback from
critics. John Maytham from the Cape Talk has been quoted saying that the show
was “brilliant. Emotionally riveting”. Tickets range from R130 to R230 per
person with the show running for 2 hours and 20 minutes with a 20-minute

· The Sound
of Music Show. The Artscape is
proud to host Andrew Lloys Webber's popular musical show “The Sound of Music”
from the 6th to the 27th of May. Ticket prices range
between R100-R500 per person depending on your choice of seating. The shows
duration is 2 hours 43 minutes with a 20-minute interval between part 1 and 2. The
Arts Cafe Restaurant will be open prior to the evening shows for dinner,

· CycloFemme
Ride Cape Town. This event is free of charge and is open to all who want to
celebrate and highlight the role of women and minority groups in cycling. The
event follows an 8km route which begins at the Green Point Urban Park and
continues along the cycle route in Sea Point, ending at the Oranjezicht City
Farm market in Granger Bay. You will need to bring your own bicycle, helmet and
lock. The ride begins at 10am and will end at noon. We encourage you to explore
the farm market and enjoy some freshly made food from the various stalls.
· UB40 Live
in Cape Town. Grand West is the place to be on the 15th of May
with UB40 performing live as part of their 25th Anniversary Tour. If
you love the classic “Red, Red, Wine” or “Can’t help falling in love”, then do
not miss out on this concert. Tickets cost R460 per person and can be bought on

· Dynamo –
Seeing is Believing Tour. On the 18th and 19th of
May, global sensation Dynamo will be performing his latest tour at the Grand
Arena at Grand West. This is his first performance in Cape Town and forms part
of his yearlong “Seeing is Believing Tour”. Tickets range from R375 to R675

· Cabernet
Franc Carnival. You are in for a treat on 19th May. Avontuur
Estate along the popular Root 44 opens its doors to the public and invites you
to come and experience the niche market that has been running for 3 years. The
event takes place from 11am – 4pm and tickets cost R220 pre-event or R250 at
the gate. Your ticket gains you access to the event, as well as a branded wine
glass, tastings and a R50 food voucher. There is a tutored session available

· Stellenbosch
Craft Spirit Festival. If Craft Spirit is your thing, then look no further.
You will be able to enjoy craft-distilled spirits from all over South Africa
and meet the people behind these legendary spirits. Rum, Gin, Vodka, Whiskey,
Tequila, Cognac and more are on offer. You will also be treated to live
entertainment and a wide selection of food items. Tickets cost R150 per person
and include a tasting glass, tasting vouchers and entertainment. This event

· FNB Cape
Town 12 One Run. This annual event consists of a 12km run which starts in
Milnerton and ends in the middle of town at the FNB building. The race begins
at 9am and entrance costs R170-850 per person. Expect to have KFM entertain you
at the start and finish line. If you aren’t an avid runner, fear not, you can
still be a spectator and support the runners as they head down the 12km
route.

· The South
African Independent Film Festival. This not-to-be-missed event takes place
from 24th to 27th May at the Labia Theatre in Orange
Street and features a wide range of films created by a wide variety of
filmmakers, some very seasoned and others branching out for the first time.
This year welcomes some international films into the mix – a first for this
annual film festival. This event has no entry fee so don’t miss out on the
amazing local South African talent.
· Bo-Kaap
Tour and Cape Malay Lunch. Bilquees Baker, a local Bo-Kaap resident, will
be taking the tour group out to various places in the Bo-Kaap including South
Africa’s oldest Mosque, and will be providing guests with invaluable history
lessons about the Bo-Kaap area. The tour will end with a delicious homemade
Cape Malay lunch for guests to enjoy. The tour starts at 10am and ends at 2pm
on the 26th of May. The Tour begins at the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum. Tickets

· The 15th
Annual Wacky Wine Weekend. Taking place at the Robertson Wine Valley this
festival is a major event on the Cape Town calendar and lets guests explore 40
wine estates over the 4-day event. Each wine estate will provide guests with
various activities and tastings showcasing their best wines on offer. This
festival is a wine lovers must-do event of the season. Expect to be entertained
with live music performances throughout the event. Tickets are R200 per person with the event
